• From now until Tuesday, Dec. 23 – Holiday Carriage Rides continue on a scenic path through Market Street from 6 – 9 pm. Horse-drawn carriage rides are $14 per couple or $8 per person and free for children two and under.

HOLIDAY HOURS CONTINUE AT THE WOODLANDS MALL – The Woodlands Mall has extended hours through the final shopping days of the holiday season. The mall will be open from 9 am – 10 pm today through Dec. 19; 8 am – 10 pm Saturday, Dec. 20; 10 am through 8 pm Sunday, Dec. 21; 8 am – 10 pm Dec. 22 and 23 and 8 am – 6 pm Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve).The mall will be closed Christmas Day and will be open 8 am – 9 pm Dec. 26.  Regular hours will resume on Saturday, December 27. HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS AT THE YMCA – During this busy season, the YMCA has many holiday events and activities planned to keep the kids busy and active.

Holiday Break Camp for children ages 5-12 will be available at Conroe Camp Owen from 7:00 am – 6:30 pm Dec. 22-23, Dec. 26, Dec. 29-30, Jan. 2 and Jan. 5. Outdoor activities may include hiking, archery, canoeing, horseback riding, games and more. Children experience a full day of camp fun! All campers must pre-register. Transportation is provided from the South Montgomery County YMCAto Conroe Camp Owen. The bus leaves at 8:30 am and returns at 4:30 pm.

Holiday Climbing Wall Clinics offers young climbers (ages 5 and older) the opportunity to choose the appropriate harness and helmet, learn climbing techniques and play games. The older age groups (ages 8 and older) will learn how to choose appropriate equipment, tie knots, improve climbing skills, learn new skills and play games. On Tuesday, Dec. 23, the clinic is offered from 1:30 – 2:30 pm for beginners age 5 and older; and from 2:20 – 3:30 pm for ages 10 and older. On Tuesday, Dec. 30, the clinic is for children 8-9 years old from 1:30 – 2:30 pm.

Holiday Swim Stroke Clinics offer swim instruction for advanced swimmers ages 6-12, with a focus on refining skills of back, freestyle, breast and butterfly strokes. Each clinic will focus on a different stroke. On Monday Dec. 29, the clinic will be held atShadowbend Pool, and will focus on freestyle and backstroke from 4 – 5 pm. On Tuesday, Dec. 30, breaststroke and butterfly will be the focus from 4 – 5 pm at Shadowbend Pool. BALANCING YOU, WOMEN’S CONFERENCE SCHEDULED FOR JAN. 9 – The First Annual Women’s Conference in Montgomery County, “Balancing You: Harmony With Your Hands Full,” is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 from 7 am – 4:30 pm at Lone Star College-Montgomery. Balancing Youis focused on informing, inspiring, and challenging professional women in Montgomery County. The intent is to bring together established executives, as well as young professionals, to promote diversity, the spirit of working together and the value of leadership. This is a collaborate event and is a partnership between Lone Star College System, Lone Star College-Montgomery and the Montgomery County Association for Business Women (MCABW). MCABW plans to create an endowed scholarship for working women as part of their involvement with the conference and have numerous volunteers participating.

Through keynote addresses by notable figures in the region, and three tracks of break-out sessions, Balancing You will give insight into the three areas of life that all professional women juggle; professional balance, personal balance, and relationships. The day-long conference will promote health and well being, developing professional fortitudes and learning to cope with various relationships from aging parents to pre-school children and everything in between.

The keynote speaker will be Jan Latiolais Hargrave, author of a number of books including Let Me See Your Body Talk, Freeway of Love, Judge the Jury and Strictly Business Body Language. Hargrave has also been a talk-show guest of The Lifetime Channel, Fox News, The Maury Povich Show, The Montel Williams Show and others. INTERFAITH OFFERING FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT CLASSES BEGINNING JAN. 19 – Interfaith of The Woodlands will once again host Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University financial management classes beginning Jan. 19, 2009. Presented by The Woodlands resident Terry Loughridge, the course will focus on several principles including: eliminating debt, creating budgets, techniques for saving, investing for retirement, and managing real estate. “This is a wonderful opportunity for people of all income levels to organize and gain control of their finances,” said Dr. Ann Snyder, president and CEO of Interfaith of The Woodlands.

Classes will be held at Interfaith of The Woodlands, 4242 Woodrush Drive on Mondays from 6:30 – 8:30 pm on Monday, January 19, 2009 for the following 13 weeks, excluding March 16 for Spring Break. All participants will be required to purchase a $45 workbook kit with scholarships available. This morning I read Roy H. Williams’s Monday Morning Memo, titled, “Introverts and Extroverts”.  I’m an introvert and his memo got me thinking.  I was thinking about how in times of Red Alert stress, most us contract into our personality comfort zones.  Extroverts communicate and interact with more flair and energy, Introverts like me, withdraw and quietly turn inside.  

I wanted to share this with you because during the holiday season our celebrations, communication and interactions can be made richer.   We can enrich others and ourselves by by consciously considering and responding to the personality traits of others.  Moving outside our comfort zone is…ummm…uncomfortable, but worth the effort.  

Here’s two snippets from the Memo:

“Introverts rarely say what they are thinking.  They say only what they have thought. Introverts think to talk.” 

“When introverts get stuck, they close the door, turn off the radio, take the phone off the hook and go deep inside themselves to find the answer.  When extraverts get stuck they strike up a conversation with someone. This gets the mental flywheel spinning again and sure enough, within moments, out pops an idea. Extraverts get their best ideas during conversation”

THE WOODLANDS HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLANDERS CAPTURE STATE CROSS COUNTRY TITLE - The Woodlands High School Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country Teams (pictured) recently secured the title of State Champions and will be recognized by theConroe ISD Board of Trustees at the December 16, 2008 meeting. These Highlander athletes won the UIL Class 5A State Cross Country Meet in both the girls’ and boys’ division on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock, Texas.  Winning the state championships was a fitting finale to an outstanding season for both teams.

The boys’ championship is added to a long list of incredible accomplishments including winning the 30th district title; capturing the 26th regional title of the past 28 years; and securing the 15th state championship. Members of the team are Tyler Bradley, Drew Butler, Nathan Carbajal, Reed Connor, Landon Milhorn, Ross Moulder, and Tom Sanderson.  Alternates for the team are Kyle Brundage, Eric Evans, Brad Folks, Kyle Michelsen, Stevie Mize, Colin Peterson, Andrew Scheffey, Phil Schneider andVadie Williams.  Head coach for the team is Dan Green who is assisted by Juris Green, Ryan Williams, Shawn Hamilton, Edgar Cantu and Matt Hemberger.

The girls’ cross county team won eight of the nine meets entered this season and finished second in the other meet to a #1 ranked team in the nation.  For most of the season this team was ranked the #1 team in Texas.  Members of the team are Sarah Andrews, Shawn Dalglish, Shelby Hayes, Margo Lyons, Colleen Murray, Samantha Thompson and Taylor Wiseman. 

Alternates for the team are Michelle Creasman, Amanda Porter and Jordan Wiseman.  Head coach for the team is Noel W. Hansen who is assisted by Kristen Saldana.

TWO ATHLETES FROM TWHS HONORED - TheConroe ISD Board of Trustees will honor student athletes Sarah Andrews, Girls’ Cross Country State Champion and Reed Connor, Boys’ Cross Country State Champion, both fromThe Woodlands High School, at the December meeting.  Andrews and Connor (pictured) are members of the Highlander teams which also captured the UIL Class 5A State Cross Country Championships.

Sarah Andrews is currently a junior and was undefeated during the season winning first place in eight meets.  She was the individual state meet champion with a time of 10:44, which is the second fastest time ever run on the state meet course.  She has been named to the First Team All-State Team and broke the Nike South 5K course record by 1 minute.

Reed Connor, a senior at The Woodlands High School, is a member of the First Team All-State Team and finished with a time of 14:47 when he captured the state title.  His finish time is the second fastest run at the state meet.

For the convenience of shoppers, The Woodlands Mall has extended valet parking hours during the holiday season. Montgomery County Community Foundation (MCCF) board member Henry Brooks recently presented a $5,000 donation to The Friendship Center at MCCF’s annual holiday award ceremony.
